Commutations for People Serving Federal Drug Sentences

This week, President Obama commuted the prison sentences of more individuals serving time in Federal Prison, most of whom were serving sentences for drug offenses. As I tweeted earlier this week, there has never been a better time to serve a drug sentence in Federal Prison. The names and offenses for those receiving pardons are available here

President Obama has already done more commutations than any other President, and has promised to do more by the end of his term. Many of the people whose sentences are commuted were facing stringent mandatory minimum sentences. The Obama Justice Department has requested clemency applications and made reducing Federal drug sentences a priority. While almost everyone serving a Federal drug sentence has already applied for clemency when the D.O.J. announced the program a few years ago, anyone who has not applied but is currently serving a sentence should do so right away.

Most Presidents will issue pardons a clemencies in the waning days of their last terms. President Obama will continue to issue more than most. But there is no guarantee that the next President will follow suit. This will continue to be a hot topic in the months to come.
