High School Mock Trial UPDATE

As you may recall if you read my earlier blog on the subject, I served as a scoring juror for the North Carolina Mock Trial Regional Competition final round held in Salisbury back in February. I was quite impressed with both teams that participated in the finale, and especially impressed with the winning team, the Central Carolina Homeschoolers team. In every aspect they were sharp and well prepared, and were confident in their execution and performance. They were also fine examples of our youth, as they exhibited great sportsmanship and character (as in fact did all of the teams, many of which stayed to watch the finale and applauded at its conclusion). All of this was covered in more detail in the prior post.

It then came as no big surprise when they went on to win the state competition. While I did not serve there, I spoke with some of the lawyers I knew who were at that competition (some of whom were also at the Salisbury regional) and they reported that the team was just as impressive in the state championship rounds as they had been in the regional. However, I had not heard the last from them.

Earlier this month the Central Carolina Homeschoolers went to Connecticut for the National Mock Trial Championship and did something that no North Carolina team had ever done before: they won it all! Faced with yet another different “case” for this competition, they once again did what they had done at each level before: they buckled down, worked hard, rehearsed and prepared, and won.

I want to extend my congratulations to the team, their coaches, advisors, parents and sponsors. They have much to be proud of, and I am proud of them as well.
